During the summer of 2021 I was accepted to be an illustration intern at Cures of Colors. A non profit organization that creates coloring books to help connect children between the ages 4-8, social settings in mental health, financial literacy, LGBTQ+, gender and race. These topics are introduce in settings that are placed in a fantasy world with characters that represent them respectively. I worked within a creative team of 5: Samantha Alea, Armando Nieto, Sara Mueller, Mattie Schott, and Meghan Hjerpe. Along with our creative advisors: Brittany Chung (Founder), Jackie Muir, and Ariel Giacobbe to guide us through the process and finalize designs and drafts. Our team's topic was Bullying. I worked on 5 pages and designed the cover.
Camp Roar is centered on a monster girl named, Jojo. She's a cute monster who loves to play nice and loves cute things. Being not like the other monsters, Jojo finds it hard to fit in Camp Roar as she does not really follow the monster way of being messy and gross. This puts her in a vulnerable spot and makes it easy for her to be bullied. Jojo receives the help and encouragement to stand up for herself with her best friend, Pip and little brother Gorp. Camp Roar discusses about the scenarios of bullying in a monster/camp setting. Camp Roar has donated 2,000 copies to underserved kids in the community. I had the opportunity to design the main character Jojo. It was a challenge to get her body right as our team wanted her to have four legs and arms. I made turnaround sheets of how body worked and looked like being put together. This benefitted my team and gave them an idea of how she looked in every angle.
